red feathers on hen tummy: Scarlet Chested Parakeet

Post by finchandlovebird » Sat Nov 07, 2015 12:05 pm

Gladys is just finishing a molt. (she had 2 clutches; 1 chick in the 1st & 2 chicks in the 2nd). I noticed red feathers on her tummy & wondered about that.
Sorry for the poor pics, but when I crop & resize, so much resolution is lost. Think you can still see the red though.

Beautiful bird!!! Do you have finches with this bird? She is so pretty, i think i would enjoy a bird I could handle.

this is called red belly or red fronted, some have the red that appears between the legs, both males and females can have this...others have it extending more up the front of the lower belly... you can not breed for it but use it when pairing a future mate with the bird...you can pair it with another red belly with the hopes of pushing more red up the belly of the offspring.

A majority of my young from various pairs have this upon fledging and the first molt.

so Cindy, is that a good thing?
And is it something they lose after a molt?

I have not seen any of mine loose it...Red especially on males from the chest patch to the vent are desired birds.
