new cage setup for Splendids

Post by finchandlovebird » Mon Nov 23, 2015 10:41 am

Has anyone ever taken a F050 (37Lx23wx60h) & set it on it's side (on some kind of platform) to get a 60" long cage :?:
I have a F050 which I had made into upper & lower apartments & just took the divider out to give my grasskeets more room. So now they have the whole cage & fly around & keep much busier than before. I understand they should have 5' length to fly in; but at least they now have more room than before

Debbie, I didn't do that with the F050......only wondered if anyone has done it before. The cage as set up now is 37L 23W 60H.

If you should want to get a new cage, look at:
A and E Cage Co. Double Flight Bird Cage 16421
Not cheap right now, ~$300 and sometimes more.
Worth waiting for the occasional sale that come along.

Or: http://www.amazon.com/Double-Birdhouse- ... ird-Flight
I have one and it is excellent for splendids. Five feet x 18 inches deep x 32" high, with divider. Very well built. Better made than an F050 I also have. These are around $200.

It is clever but I recommend a double flight as well... Scarlets do not fly up and down like finches but across. Also if you are housing you pair in with young you need to watch your male, he may go after any male offspring as they mature...the height and narrow length can be an issue with this if he begins to chase them. Fathers are not as tolerant of young male offspring and generally want them out. Housing pairs and offspring may work well if you had a huge walk inn aviary but it normally does not work in a cage situation.

They also do not need all the toys... it can impede there ability to fly the cage well. The snugglies I would remove, nails can get caught up in those, they do not need them. They are not like budgies or lovebirds. They are not climbers like other parrots are.

Thanks all: Cindy, my young are not with the parents. They sit & swing on the rope circle rings, & chew on the multi-colored straw braids. :D

That is good but also watch for male sibling aggression as the young mature... a male sibling may try to show his dominance by going after his brother.

I would not encourage chewing on string, if ingested it can cause complications and impaction.

Great set up for Splendids. I had some tame ones and they loved to fly around my house so the more space, the better, for them.
