So this is Zane

Post by Jason in TX » Mon Dec 28, 2015 10:22 pm

(Reminder- Hand raising any bird is a full time commitment that requires constant attention and a lot of knowledge. It should not be taken on lightly, and without a massive amount of research. This thread is not intended to recommend hand rearing.)

So this is Zane. He is a turquoise green cheek conure. He was hatched March 16, 2015. He came home 3 weeks later. It was pretty clear to me that he was a special dude. He watched me non-stop, and was a bit of a beggar even though his weight and intake data showed he was getting what he needed.

It did not take long for him to begin showing his beautiful plumage.

His favorite thing to do while living in his temperature and humidity controlled aquarium was trying to sit on his swing......which usually ended with lying on the floor!

When he had enough feathers to finally start spending time other than feeding outside of his aquarium, he quickly became a daddy's boy. He love to take naps on my neck.

Over the last 9 months he has become a needy bird that loves to hang out on my shoulder while I walk around the house, and sit on my chest while watching television. He mimics sounds incredibly well. He calls me sweetheart (because my girlfriend does). His favorite thing to say is "hey bird bird", but he also says "love you, do you love me?". I can hear him practicing other words but I can't understand them yet. The best bird I could imagine!

He is absolutely adorable (and I am not a real hookbill person, so that is a true compliment).

I love the picture of him attempting to swing and falling on the ground....reminds me of a few u-hem.. somewhat unfortunate incidents when I was a wee child (I know how it feels Zane!)

He sounds like a wonderful little companion :-).

I love the pictures, keep 'em coming.

He's just beautiful! You should make a video of him talking and post it so we can see how much fun he's having!

Thanks for the kind words y'all! Other than talking he mimics coughing, sneezing, Gouldian chirping, seagulls (I live on the water, he hears them non-stop). I'll try and get video of him talking, but here he is coughing. Turn up your volume and you will hear him cough right after me.

Told ya! He had a bit of a chest cold like me. ;) I'm going to set up a camera tomorrow morning to get him talking. I think he does it for attention, so when I walk up to his cage to film he thinks he got the attention so he stops! The only time he talks while on my shoulder is when he is trying to find my girlfriend. He calls her bird bird for some reason. Conures clearly don't talk like an African Gray, but they can absolutely be taught. It's so much fun.

So every Saturday is cleaning day for his cage. Before cleaning it I let him make a big wet mess. He LOVES bath day! I warm the water, get a heat lamp ready next to his table top perch and let him have some fun! This is the result....
