Red-flanked lorikeets

Post by w.l. » Sun Mar 26, 2017 3:14 am

For a change from finches, I decided to post a pic of one of my 3 species of parrots. :-)

So far I am sticking to the petite and pretty species.
Though also messy ones, certainly not as easy to keep as budgies!
This pair was initially housed with my hanging parrots, but this morning I found the male attacking the poor male blue-crowned hanging parrot, so now they have been moved to a cage of their own.

Those colors look brighter on the photo than they really are due to the use of flash.
They are wild-caught so not tame at all. In fact, despite being the size of budgies, they gave me literally bleeding bites when I caught them to move. :-) Oh well. I don't insist on petting my birds. Like finches, they can be enough just to look at.

I didn't realize they were that small. Very beautiful though.

When I had my Love birds, I had to use leather gloves, after my one psycho bird put her beak right through the skin between my thumb and forefinger, locked her beak and wouldn't let go.

Regarding petting our birds, it can be very pleasant :D

What do you know about Rosey Bourkes?

I have no interest in so know very little about Bourkes. That little being that they are easy to keep, well domesticated seed-eaters.
Keeping which would make my life much easier than hanging parrots and lorikeets!
But when it comes to beauty... I just think lories and lorikeets rule. :-)

l think when it comes to looks, my absolute favorite of the Parrot Nation, would be the King Parrot...

I find it's looks stunning, and the intelligent almost human expression in it's eyes fascinates me.

I was asking about Bourkes, because there was a very young pair available for sale for a very reasonable price, but while I thought about it, someone already snatched them up, lol.

I've always heard good things about them, and some of their color mutations a very pretty...

Ouchh, those pink birds are not for me, I am afraid.

I've been lucky enough to see 2 of the 3 species of king parrots in the wild in Australia and Indonesia.
They are beautiful, but lories are more to my taste.
And cockatoos, too...

Some of my favourites:
Yellow-streaked lory
Dusky lory
Ornate lorikeet
Papuan lorikeet

Well, that shiny bright green color is thanks to my flash...
In reality, my hanging parrots are brighter green:

Pretty, but I'll pass.

Some Cockatoos however, are amazingly beautiful, but alas too late in life to start with one of these beauties...
