Keeping Button Quail with aggressive finch species?
Is it possible to keep buttons in an aviary with finch species that are labeled aggressive? Will the finches pick on them or do they generally leave them alone because they stay on the bottom of the cage?

Probably depends on the type of "aggressive" finch...

I have a pair of Saffrons and a pair of Buttons - I too wouldn't put them together without knowing someone else had success beforehand.
Good for you for asking first! Wish I could give you an answer but I haven't tried it.

Yes, absolutely. Lots of people do. Just make sure it's a bigger aviary/flight as Buttons need room to roam and may "pop" if startled.summert85 wrote:well, here's another question...can you keep quails with gouldians and owl...the non aggressive finches?

I don't have saffron, but my button quails live happily with 10+ different types of finches in a large aviary. I never have problem between button quails finches, only having with the quails among hemself.
Stars, Gouldians, Orange Weaver, Diamond Firetails, Canaries, Blue Gray Tanager, Red Golden Pheasants, Lady Amherst Pheasants, Bourkes, Scarlet Chested, Turquosines.

Re: Keeping Button Quail with aggressive finch species?
I too have buttons in a large walk-in aviary together with finches and budgies. One of my gouldians is elderly and handicapped and lives on the floor now, and the buttons don't bother her. They eat out of the same food and water dishes.
However, I think I wouldn't put buttons in an aviary together with bigger birds, especially some that are considered aggressive. I just wouldn't take the chance... And I would NOT put buttons in a cage with any other bird. So it all depends on what type of bird and size of flight-cage/aviary you plan on having...
I'm pretty sure the buttons are no threat to any other species, but I am not experienced with agressive types of birds. (Except my 2 parrotlets and they are kept separate from everybody. They would terrorize all others, small or big. )

I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I understand Coturnix Quail are much bigger than Button Quail so I'm really not sure whether they would get along or not.summert85 wrote:Is COTURNIX quails okay?

Re: Keeping Button Quail with aggressive finch species?
Coturnix quail are MUCH bigger than button quail. I have never heard of anybody keeping them in an aviary with other birds. They are much more like the size of small chickens, where buttons are about the size of budgies. (Only rounder... ) I don't know anything about whether Coturnix are aggressive or not, but I can't imagine that you would put big birds like that with your finches.

Thank you for the replies everyone.
Ursula - its not the finches I'm worried about its the buttons. I would hate to put them together with saffrons and have the saffrons beat up on them constantly

Re: Keeping Button Quail with aggressive finch species?
Saffrons or other aggressive finches will not bother Button Quail. The only problem I have had is the quail killing and eating babies that fall out of a nest.
Saffrons will kill other finches especially if they are yellow in color. Not a nice bird at all. Keep single pairs only.

Re: Keeping Button Quail with aggressive finch species?
Thank you very much JohnBoy for the information. I got a pair of Saffrons and have them in a really large flight/aviary (its just not walk in) and was thinking of getting a few buttons to put in with them since they are the only ones in there. So happy to know that they wont pick on the little buttons
