Crippled button quail getting a bath :)

Post by tinysparrow » Tue Dec 18, 2012 3:53 pm

Today I gave one of my button quail hens a bath :) Here is a picture of her in her little towel, all cleaned up.

She is crippled. I think that she was born this way. I got her from another breeder, and when I picked her up to bring her home when she was very young her foot was bent very badly and her leg was bent sideways. She requires a bath weekly as she cannot stand up properly, and because of this, she drags herself around on the cage floor.

It may seem like its very sad, but to be honest, she has become a true blessing to me. Because I have had to handle her so much, she has become super tame. She comes running to me when I call her, sits in my hands and loves to go for a warm bath. She is so cute! <3

So cute!

My CBQ won't bathe in water. The male take a dirt bath in the food dish and the female fills the water dish with whatever is on the cage floor. No matter how often I clean it, in about an hour and it's fouled up (pun intended!)

I relate to this, as my star finch, Fruit, cannot fly and is six years old. He broke his wing when he was a year old, and cannot fly. I wash him regularly, with soft cotton wool and dry tissue and wipe him down, as he cannot preen (he had his preening gland removed due to contant inpaction/infection). He doesn't REALLY like it but takes it with equananimity and is very easy to handle and medicate. This has been good when he has been sick several times, and has needed medication to the beak. Your bird (Button Quail?) looks like a real sweetie. Good luck with her.

starfighterace, mine take dust baths too :) I give them chinchilla dust as I find it's easier to clean than sand. strangely, they also will take water baths once and a while, when the other birds are all bathing.

jerry, yes they are great birds.

and zebrafincher, your star finch is so lucky to have you to take care of him :)
