Do button quail stink ????

Post by Jane&finch » Sun Jan 05, 2014 2:40 am

Ok so i have been unable to find a straight answer for this question anywhere online and i want to know if button quails stink ?? I really want to get 2 soon cuz i think they would make a nice addition to my family of birds but i am not a fan of the smell of animal poop at all and i am really happy with how my finches do not smell at all and are super easy to care for and clean there cages. ... I plan on building a nice large enclosure to keep a single pair in and lining the bottom of the enclosure with a couple inches of wood shavings or whatever you wana call them. How often would this need to be changed and do they stink ???? If anyone can let me know what they suggest or there experince with these birds that would be awesome !

My buttons do NOT stink. If you take care of them properly, there is no smell. I'm surprised with all the comments about them smelling. I have had 6 in an enclosure that is about 18" x 39" (roughly), and they do not stink. And it's not because I cant smell them. I have had people over and they have never said they smell. Even if I ask them. I clean the cage at least once a week and I use pine shavings. Anything over a week, and there is a slight smell to the bedding, but this is with 6 of them. Now they are split up into two cages. I love my little button quail. :D

You are very welcome. I use the Kaytee Pine bedding/shavings. I think the other stuff is a little too hard. Kaytee is very nice and soft. I also use puppy pads on the bottom of my aviary under the bedding. That way when it's time to clean I just roll it up on one side and put down a new pad. They hop over onto the new pad and I finish rolling up the other side. Drop it in a bag and done. Add new bedding with them in the aviary and they are totally fine with it. Hope this helps. Good luck with your new buttons!!
