my bc male has chestnut brown spots on it's side but i read that
bc males have black spots on their sides...do i have a bc split?

Yes the black cheek males usually have black sides, not chestnut, like in here

Does your male have a full black cheeks? He might be just split, but if you post a picture that would help a lot

there are black cheek with brown flanks and there are black cheek with black ones.
so he could be a black cheek with brown flanks. nothing unusual.
teh bc with black flank is much attractive
