Babies have flegded! All different colors??

Post by 2manypets » Wed Aug 04, 2010 4:03 pm

My zebras have finally been successful at raising some young. The 3 just fledged from the nest this morning!! :D
I have a question though... 2 of them are so light gray they are almost white, and once is solid tan. Is it normal for them to look so different from the parents? I know they won't color up as far as being able to tell the sex for a while, but I'm wondering mainly if there is a chance they will be different than the parents in the end.
Thanks! They are so very cute... I'll try to post some pix later!

Congrats on the fledglings =D>
Yes it can be very normal for the babies to have no resemblances to their parents. This is one of the interesting things about zebras, they can hide their genetics for generations. I even have a CFW out of a normal pied female and normal male. Of course I did know ahead of time that this baby's great Uncle was also a CFW. But it is always amazing to see just how long they can hide these genetics.

Enjoy! The variety that comes out of each cluch is what makes Zebbies one of the most fun to breed. I never know from clutch to cluch what to expect, but am never dissapointed.

I just learned about this, this past weekend when I met with "NAGDABIT" to buy some of his Z-Finches. He was telling us about these little guys and how their genetics work. Some of it was way over my head, but its amazing at how sometimes a certain gene/trait can stay hidden for awhile then all of sudden crop up when they breed with another bird. Cool Stuff!

Enjoy your babies!
