Two pairs of Gouldians together?

Post by Eddie » Fri Mar 04, 2011 8:26 pm

Hi everyone. I'm brand new to this great site and had a quick question about housing gouldian pairs. I have a small aviary I built for my gouldians. (I'm hoping to be done with the roof this weekend!!!) I have one pair and would like to buy a second pair for a total of four. If I housed the two pairs together and eventually added nests for breeding, would the two pairs get along ok? The cage is 5 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Thanks!

Hi Eddie,

Yes, two pairs would be fine together but watch out for a dominant pair that will cause havoc for the other pair. It is usually best to house pairs in three so that one pair doesn't suffer at the hands of the dominant pair.

Normally Gouldians are not territorial but they can be so just watch for the signs.

I've had large cages with two pair in them without a problem but like Misty said sometimes the birds can be territorial. I'd just watch for any negative signs and be prepared to separate them if need be.
Good luck

Put any nestboxes at the same height to reduce conflict...the most dominant will always go for the highest.

I do the same thing. Don't remember where I heard it but it was MANY years ago now so I've always had them all the same height. :D
