Bird I.D?

Post by kevrina » Wed Mar 23, 2011 4:02 pm

Hi I am new to bird keeping and was recently given two finches, one was a Begalese, but the other I cannot identify. So can anyone help and tell me what kind of finch this is?

Welcome! That's a shafttail grass finch. The males have a great song/call.

Thanks very much for your reply. It must be a male as it has been singing/ chirping since I got him.

A shafttail indeed. A fawn shafttail I believe; very beautiful. Both male and female shafttail "sing" but they have different "calls" or sounds.

From the size of his "bib" I'd say it's a male fawn shafttail...but you never know...lol
