gould hen

Post by trevorama » Wed Dec 05, 2007 7:51 pm

My new female gouldian makes a sharp high pitched call. She is coming into breeding condition. Could this be a call to the male? or is that just the noise they make? He's still not singing. Hopefully he'll start up again.

If you haven't had her for very long she may be using the call to try and locate birds she was with before you got her.

I've had them for a week and a half. Can they remember that far back?.... I'm sure I'm just very paranoid because they are Goulds and I've never had them before. Thanks!

Are the two together? I had a girl that just would not shut up, and she was with birds (hens only) that she was very familiar with. I gave up and gave her a boyfriend, and you should have seen the action!

My gouldian hen used to make those noises before I got her a nice boy. She'd do it when I entered the room, especially. Now she only does it rarely.

Before I got her she was with her sisters. She's now with the male we got at the same time. Maybe she doesn't like him :(

It's possible she doesn't like him right now, but give it some time. We have had several hens over the years that did not like a male at first, but after giving it some time they bonded and it was all hisotry at that point. Heck it took Michele 6 months before she liked me(LOL), and now we are married.

SO my pretty girl has now taken over one of the food cups and it appears she is nesting. I wasn't expecting that! SHe gets in there and looks out over the edge, hops out and makes that weird call. She is coming into breeding condition and looks like so is the male. He doesn't seem to do much but sit in the middle of the cage. He has been singing again though. How long do they stay in breeding condition?

How long they stay in breeding depends on when they start their molt. It seems to vary a bit from place to place depending on the climate and hours of daylight. They should be good until maybe late spring, but it's hard to give an exact answer.
