Bronze Mannakins?

Post by flrancho » Sat Apr 09, 2011 6:56 am

Some time ago I'd seen a bunch of Bronze Mannakins at the flea market when I bought my Silverbill finch. I'd never seen them before, but I was quite intrigued by them.

I don't know anything about them either. I want to do some research online, but was wondering if anyone here had had then personally and could tell me some things about them. Did they get along with your other birds? What other birds did you keep them with? What is they're song like? Any vices like nails that tend to get overgrown?

I also like the BWM's. However they can be extremely aggressive. Especially when breeding. I keep mine with the larger finches like javas whydahs and other mannikins. Males will also fight other males if there are not enough females. Since they are so hard to sex I'd recommend getting a group of at least 6 birds and introducing them to the cage at the same time. That way no territory wars.

i totally agree with the last post, they have a song like a society finch, but they are extremely nasty to other breeds especially when breeding...i have never known such a little bird fight so much even as the last post said ...with each other ,also i agree with the get a few idea as they are hard to sex like all manakins only the male sings.they look lovely in the sunlight when the light catches thier wings.....but if you intend getting them they are lovely birds but expect a few fireworks along the way

I just purchased two of these this weekend. Since the gender is hard to tell, I don't know what I have. Both chirp and make noises, but I don't know if this is the actual song. So far they are getting along with each other. They are actually pretty quiet and docile birds most of the time. At least this is what I've noticed so far. I don't know how they act towards other birds. These are the only two birds in the cage.

I am looking forward to learning more about them.

I have a male/female pair and originally had them in with other birds, but they have bullied my green singers! My owl finches, rccbs, society, spice, and orange cheek waxbills! I can't put them in a cage with any other species. They are so beautiful and tiny, but so very aggressive and mean to other birds, as a pair. They took over every other bird nest and laid eggs in each nest to claim them!!! So, now they are quiet and peaceful in their own cage with one nest and sitting on an egg or eggs. They never hardly leave the nest, except to eat briefly and I can't get a good peek to see how many eggs are there. So, we'll see if they as dutiful at caring for any hatchlings as they are at protecting their territory and nest. LOL.
Good Luck! I love their wing markings of green sheen as if they shine in the moon or are reflective and their bellies are birch colored with some spotting, like a leopard or cheetah. So natural. I think of them as mallard leopard finches. Ha Ha.
