Pin-tailed parrot finch

Post by Ursula » Tue May 17, 2011 12:22 pm

Researching parrot finches I found information about the pin-tailed parrot finch and absolutely fell in love!! =P~

How come it's always the prettiest birds (IMO) that are the hardest to breed? :(

Has anybody of you ever seen or even kept some?
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I have always drooled over this bird. It is absolutely gorgeous!
I have never seen one at a bird mart nor do I know of anyone who has ever had any. I have asked Floyd about them numerous times and he has never had any either. If you find some, let me know.

I had a few pairs of them in the 70's and early 80's. They did well in an outdoor aviary and I kept them in a heated shed in the winter months. Very hardy birds and got along with other aviary occupants. They never went to nesting and showed no interest in breeding in captivity. They lived for years.
BTW, back in the day I used to get my birds from a quarantine station in California. If I remember correctly it was called Southeastern Bird Supply. Pin-tailed Nonpareil Parrot finches sold for 8-$10 ea. Rarely did you see a finch for over $10 ea.

Well, since they are hard to breed and IF you get some they are wild caught it's going to remain a dream for me... :-)

But I'm definitely hooked on the parrot finches. I think the seagreen and pied are the ones I really like best...
