Post by cindy » Tue Jul 12, 2011 5:27 pm

My BC pair has set up housekeeping...nest and eggs in a mesh long tunnel. The bottom is lined and back is built up. The have about 6 eggs right now due to hatch soon.

Awesome nest builders! Did you build the tube nest yourself? is the back open like the front? Do your Zebras prefer this type of nest? How do you connect it to the top of the cage? Never mind that question. I see zip ties! What would we do without zip ties and duct tape?? :-s Sorry so many questions but I really like the look of the tube nest and I'm always curious when people build their own things for their birds.

For larger birds I cut a long section cover a smaller piece with paper towels and tape the towel on the underside of the piece with masking tape. I place the flat towel covered piece on the floor of the cage and cover with Cozy Comfort bedding. I take a plastic place mat cut wide enough to cover the back, secure it directly to the cage bars and then secure the plastic mesh nest back edges with zip ties right over the piec securing it tightly to the bars.

They built out the nest using coco fiber and Timothy grass. This pair always gives me large clutches and boxes were not big enough. When the chicks fledge, I take the flooring and nest material out and it becomes a roosting place for the family.

3 or the 5 pairs of BC and BC CCFW have this type of nest...they like it! The other 2 have keet open face wooden boxes.
