Water bottle or water silo???

Post by Finchgirl » Thu Jul 28, 2011 4:44 pm

I am planning to get two zebra finches, does anybody have opinions on which their finches or finches in general like most?

Hi and welcome to the Finch Forum. Would love to have you jump over to the Introductions Forum and introduce yourself a bit. I see you've already got your minimum 5 posts done (that was FAST!) and now your free to post anywhere in here.

I would say do whatever the birds are used to (at their current location) and then switch to whatever suits you better. I am currently switching all my finches from water dishes to water tubes with the little extension at the bottom that holds a 'puddle' of water where they dip their beaks into. The transition seems to be going faster than I thought it would. =D>

Also if you put your location in your profile, it makes it easier and faster sometimes to get appropriate answers specific to your local.

Most people like the tube waterers as Liz has described.

A few of us like the ball-valve waterers best. If you go to "Search" and key in 'waterer' I have no doubt you will pull up a whole wealth of opinions on the subject!

Thanks for the info, and i was planning on getting a silo waterer, but the water bottle with the water "puddle" at the bottom sounds better so i will look out for one of those! :D

I use rather large tube waterers and like them very much. The only problem is that seeds and poop can end up in it since finces are such silly birds, so one needs to keep en eye open for that.

But my friend Elma, called Vargur on this forum, uses water bottles like often seen in hamster/rabbit cages and they work wonderful for her birds and keeps the water pure for a longer period of time.
I have though of changing to her kind of bottles, but haven't found any good ones that work for my cage so far.

I have tried a few of the water bottle types with the tube and ball (valve?) at the end that the birds have to peck at to get a drop but I haven't found any that do not leak. :?

Kenny - you're a riot!

The occasional leak from a bottle type (ball valve) is why I switched to tubes but I switched back to ball valve once I found those ones I posted about recently -- Incidentally, I haven't had a problem yet with leakage on these bv's ! Still really liking them... :)

After you posted about these, I got them too. I now have all of my birds on these and I love them. They will be especially good when I go on vacation and my friend who is taking care of them won't have to change the water as often. It did take me some time to get everyone using them in both cages, but once I was confident that everyone knew how, I took out the other waterers that I had in there. I also really like that the bracket holds them perfectly upright.
