Qustion about Yellow crowned bishop

Post by arielbergmanfinch » Wed Jun 22, 2011 10:17 am

Hello everybody I am new here,my name is Ariel and I have several kind of finches : Diamond finches, Star finches, Owl finches,Masked finches,Zebra finches,Firefinch,Common waxbills,Gold breasted waxbills,Orange winged pytilia,Paradise whydahs,Yellow crowned bishops and Gouldian finches and they all at the same aviary but I'm gonna sell most of the zebra finches because they disturb others.
In the Winter I covered the aviary with polygal and only a month ago I took it out.I have 4 bishops (1 male with 3 females) and the male is still looking like his females although its already Summer why didnt he change his plumage to breeding plumage? it could be because I didnt take the polygal away earlier and it was much darker in the aviary so he didnt understand that its summertime and thats why he didn't change his plumage??
:?

Mine is in breeding plumage and is driving the female nuts. She can't be bothered with him. I posted a video recently of his display and chasing the female around the cage.
I have no clue why your male has not come into breeding colors.

Ariel, I think we would only be guessing but molting and plumage changes normally revolve around the seasons. I am thinking you are right -- he didn't think it was summer yet because of the darkness when you didn't remove the polygal. I don't know where you live but maybe if it warms up quite a bit he will start to molt into his breeding plumage...

Welcome to the forum!

If more members had answers they would certainly post them. I guess this is just not a very common species and many members probably don't have experience with them... :-)

The male is now chaging his feathers to breeding plumage!! almost all his belly start to be black and he has yellow feathers almost all over his body but there's a lot of brown feathers all over his body I think that in two or three weeks he will changed all of his feathers :)
