Surprised with Owl Finch Aggression?

Post by ranchnanny » Thu Sep 01, 2011 12:36 pm

What's happening to my male Owl? Since his mate has been laying eggs he has turned into a Jeckyl & Hyde. Things were going along quite well until this morning when he started chasing my Societies.
He chases others but chases the Societies the most. He doesn't want them anywhere on that side of the flight. Can I use a spray bottle to squirt him when he gets aggressive? My owls were always so quiet.
He flys out of the nest like a bull out of a shute.

Any ideas ?

He is protecting the nest, probably has eggs. Plus, Societys, as you know, love to share nests. They will go right into a nest with eggs, without a thought they might crush them. They just love to be social. So, let him chase them off, unless you want them to disturb the nest and eggs. Good Luck.

I agree that he is protecting his nest and eggs....The cage may be a little small for his liking...If they are really disturbing him and his nest you may have to move the Societies to another cage

Do not spray the male (spraying finches does not teach them anything) he is doing what he is suppose to do, protect what is his. Societies will go in and take over a nest and possibly toss the owl young. I would remove the socieities to there own cage, the less stress on the parent birds at this time the better off the young will be. The societies could scare the owls off sitting or in shooing the societies away someone may get hurt.
