One Gouldian baby rearing
I was just reading in my book "Gouldian Finches" A complete pet owner's manual by Matthew M Vriends, Phd, the following statement: "Gouldians, rarely, for some reason or other, will rear successfully a single chick in the nest. In such cases it is best to foster it out."
So what's with that. I have a single 12-day old Gould that the parents seem to be doing fine with.

Every bird is different and it's not all that unusual for them to raise a single chick. Though I would hazard to say it probably doesn't happen in the wild too often.

Thank you; you've all eazed my mind. Sometimes you don't find enough information in a book, and sometimes you find TOO MUCH information! This list is invaluable!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was told the same thing about GS, regarding not feeding a lone hatchling, but my two pairs have both raised a singleton chick and they are all healthy and now juveniles. They also raised two hatchlings at once. They've never hatched more than the two chicks at one time. We'll see how they do in the future.

I wonder if it was simply a matter of economics..
Foster out the singleton in the hopes that the pair will nest again but with a larger clutch...

You know I think it's more about the fact that people only talk when bad things happen and not when good things happen, so the Gould has such a bad rep and also they don't like too much attention so that could add to the bad rep.
