Can I add canaries with my gouldians
Hi,
I have a 3 foot wide by 3 foot tall by 1.5 feet deep cage and I'm wondering if I can add a pair of fife canaries to the cage. The gouldians are currently setting up to lay eggs so I don't know if it would be a good idea to add a pair while they are in the middle of breeding, and if it would be too crowded although I have to be honest in that the gouldians are semi active so I don't think it would be a problem but I would like peoples opinions.

If they were not nesting, you could.
The canaries would be intruders and
the gouldians would more than likely
abandon the eggs.
Wait till they are finished raising the babies
before you add anymore birds.
Gouldians are temperamental as it is,
you don't need to give them another reason
to leave the eggs.

Oh ok...well they haven't laid yet but they made the nest so it's anyday now. Thanks for the heads up though. I'm going to wait and hold off on adding anyone else until the babies have fledged, or after the breeding season. I'll probably have too many babies in there anyway hopefully. Lol

Re: Can I add canaries with my gouldians
I was told by a canary breeder not to mix males with Gouldians because the canaries are much larger and the males tend to be dominant/territorial and can intimidate or possibly harass the smaller Goulds. (I really wanted a singing male but he talked me out of purchasing one because of this)

I never thought about dominance either so I'll stay away. I don't want to have trouble later on.
Thank you
Thank you

You can always have a male canary, and keep him in a separate cage!nixity wrote:I was told by a canary breeder not to mix males with Gouldians because the canaries are much larger and the males tend to be dominant/territorial and can intimidate or possibly harass the smaller Goulds. I have two canary males and a goldfinch x canary mule and they are in their own separate cages and hey are fine!

Yeah but I was hoping I could make a different species cage for when I make an aviary in the future.

You can't keep males together!tt101 wrote:Yeah but I was hoping I could make a different species cage for when I make an aviary in the future.
Canaries are solitary birds, hens can be kept together.
Only time a male and female are together is at breeding time.
To be able to have them alll in the same aviary, it would have to be huge!

No I meant if I got a bird I would want it to be compatible in an aviray, not that I was going to get canaries anymore. I think I'll add cordon blues, gold breasted waxbills or parrot finches. I'm not sure but whatever I get cannot hybridize.
