Re: Another sick gouldian :(
Dayna, I know birds hide illness well, and it is so difficult to catch things ahead of time, but I personally don't like to give antibiotics as a preventative. It can cause even further problems than it helps. JMO. I would keep a close eye on the others.

Re: Another sick gouldian :(
Dayna...I would treat the rest of your flock at the double dose of the only Ronex powder for the entire 7 days. Double powder to one dose worth of water. Do this since the birds were all together and wash the cage down well, if it is a parasites as I believe it is then it is carried in droppings and salivia.
The amoxitex is to treat secondary infections associated with the effect of parasites, like infection. I would only treat the others with Ronex right now. The amoxitex if they are not showing signs like the difficulty breathing will interfer with the flora in the digestive tract. Probiotics should be given to the sick one after you use the full course of Ronex and amoxitex.
The fact they were in the same cage is enough of a reason to treat with ronex right now...easier to treat it this way than to wait for the birds to become like the other two. If one of the sick birds pooped in food and another bird contacted it they may carry it and hide until stressed or breeding. Baycox is good also and recommended by a few members but for right now I would definately use ronex, it is safe and the double strength. If they are carrying the parasite it will stunt the growth and not take hold.

Re: Another sick gouldian :(
Ok I will just leave them alone.
He just passed away
I felt his breast bone and he was very skinny and boney. He was also really clicky sounding too. My guess is worms and ASM? I had already treated with Worm Away and Iverlux though. Could it just have been that the problem was already so bad that the regular dose of Worm Away and Iverlux just didn't cut it?
His symptoms were all different than the blue that I had pass.... so? (sigh) I just dont know!

Re: Another sick gouldian :(
So sorry, since he was in with the other I would use the ronex as I mentioned and as to why. Where the others treated for ASM also. The sick gouldians may have picked something up from the others in the cage that could be carriers. Very hard to say exactly where it came from. Parasites when they get into the lungs and blood stream steal oxygen, nurishment and cause secondary infection. The bird looses weight, gasps for air and wastes away.
The huffing, puffing and clicking, sometimes coughing is the lungs trying hard to clear the infection and pest and get the air the body needs.

So very sorry dayna. You did the best you could for him. If you already treated for asm and worms my guess would be some sort of respiratory and/or bacterial infection.
so sorry

ok I will do that and clean the cage really good. Aww the poor little guy
I wish I could have done more. In response to your last post I bought Baycox and Enrofloxyn for meds. Is there anything else that I should be getting to have on hand?[

Dayna, again I am so very sorry for our loss, it is hard to watch them in such condition...I understand and sympathize with what you must be going through.
eep an eye on the rest of your flock after the ronex, if any start to go down (I pray they do not) please let us know, now that you have meds on hand you will be able to help them faster.
I hope all your birds remain healthy and well.

Dayna,
I'm so sorry you lost your birds. I lost some last year and it is just heartbreaking. I hope the Ronex treatment "nips this in the bud" and your flock stays healthy.

Re: Another sick gouldian :(
I treated them all already once with everything I have in the last 6 weeks throughout their quarantine period. After the first one I was pretty surprised to see my second one get sick. When the first one passed it has been thought that he had coccidiosis which I didn't have the proper meds for at the time but I finished administering the rest of the meds I had to all my other birds so seeing another one get sick and pass so soon is pretty heart breaking
I will do whatever it takes to keep the rest of my flock healthy.

Re: Another sick gouldian :(
Dayna, In re-reading your posts you treated with worm away, iverlux, oil of oregano, ronex, amoxitex, and you have baycox and enrofloxyn.
What was it you treated with in quarantine? What are you treating the entire flock with now? Be careful you don't compromise the birds health by bombarding it with everything but the kitchen sink, sometimes we do more harm then good that way.I treated them all already once with everything I have in the last 6 weeks throughout their quarantine period.

Re: Another sick gouldian :(
Dayna, the Baycox is more for coccidia treatment/prevention. The symptoms do not fit that. You said you treated the birds with Iverlux and Wormaway.
Did you originally when getting them treat them with Ronex during quarantine or did you just reciee the Ronex?...it is perfectly safe to retreat the birds with this at this time.
I would not give anitbiotic or use the baycox at this point. Do the full 7 day treatment with Ronex if you have not treated the birds with it already since adding the two sick ones to the flock. After the Ronex I would observe your flock and see how every is doing. At that time is symptomatic then it might be the time to look into using something further.
I believe from what she wrote earlier she got additional meds to have on hand "just in case needed".

Re: Another sick gouldian :(
Debbie the birds have all just finished quarantine... medicinal wise anyway. When I first got them I gave them Ronex for 7 days, Iverlux 2 days, Probiotics 3 days, Worm Away and then nothing for a day. Repeated the next week with Iverlux/Probiotics/Worm Away. 4th week I finished the Iverlux treatment did 2 days Probiotics and then treated with Cocci-Care.
The amoxitex was only administered to the one sick bird this morning that passed away and I only got him to take about 3 drops of it. I put the oil of oregano on a kleenex and hung it on his cage yesterday (Lainey's advice) to try and help him any way I could get past this because I didn't want to over medicate but at the same time I didn't know what else to do so I asked Lainey for advice since I couldn't get a hold of Laraine and Lainey does all natural treatments. I also had the home made electrolyte formula in his water as well but he quit drinking shortly after I put it in his water so he didnt get much. I took up hand feeding him last night with a dropper because it was the only thing I had on hand.
The baycox and enrofloxyn I just ordered to have on hand just incase something like this ever happened again then I would be able to jump on it and stop it before to gets too far along. I haven't treated any of the birds with either of these meds.
I am worried about over medicating because I already did a string of meds as "preventatives" during quarantine but there appears to be something I must be doing wrong... I am going to give them another Ronex treatment like Cindy suggested and just keep a close eye on them. The rest of them all appear to be healthy but then again so did this little guy until 3 days ago. Either they are just really good at hiding things or I am missing something and I am pretty sure its got to be me missing something since I am still learning. I have learnt so much from this forum since I have joined but I know there is a lot more to learn.
