Java Female Question

Post by ldupuis44 » Tue Feb 07, 2012 4:29 pm

Ok, I have three Javas, two females and one male. When I give them eggfood and veggies, I notice the two females will fight and steal food from each other.
Is this normal? Should I separate one of the females into a different cage? I don't think one in a cage alone would be very happy. I guess I could get another male, but not if it is not necessary.

Hmm i am no expert in javas - but maybe you could put in more "bowls" (dont know the right word here :D) with veggies ? If there are more of them, maybe they wont eat from the same one and fight for the food :)

That would be a great suggestion if they were fighting at the food dish. But one will take a piece of say shredded cucumber from the dish, go to a perch to eat it, then the other will come along, take the piece of cucumber, right out of her mouth, eat it, then they will squabble, clash beaks at each other and fly to another spot in the cage.

My juvenile Javas were doing this the other day when I gave them some assorted fruits. They kept stealing the cantaloupe away from "Mom". Like yours, not fighting at the dish but taking the food away from her after she'd flown off with it to a perch. Didn't seem to care about the pineapple that "Dad" got.

I just kind of attributed it to them being young pesky kids that are going to get into "trouble". They juveniles don't seem to bother the parents any other time than when I gave them the fresh fruit, so I'll keep them with the parents unless any real problems arise.

For you, Javas like being in groups and I wouldn't separate one to a cage all by itself. I'd probably see if conditions improve, and maybe try another treat dish. Even if they're not fighting at the treat dishes, having other tray out of the treat may encourage it to get its own food and leave the other one alone.
