Splits ~ they will not have the big black patches but the tear will indicate split to BC. Some will have the black cheeks based on the combinations.

The first pair will be
fawn dad BC mom
50% Normal/Black cheeked Fawn Males
50% Fawn /Black cheeked Females

the full black cheek will be replaced by the thick tear indicatins split to BC

second pair
BC male and fawn female

50% Normal/Black cheeked Fawn Males
50% Normal/Black cheeked Females

offspring combined from both pairs
Female fawn/BC and a normal/ BC fawn male

12.5% Fawn /Black cheeked Males
6.25% Fawn Females
12.5% Fawn /Black cheeked Females
6.25% Fawn Males
6.25% Black cheeked /Fawn Males

No problem...I did go back to look at the first post I had made...I copied from the chart and put it into a document then copied it and pasted it here...a part is missing...the word "normal" from the first pairs males..it should have been normals/BC fawn.

the part later where I broke it down is the correct version/percentages.

I have a pair set up...male is split to fawn BB and a fawn female is split to BB OB

I remember doing genetics in high school, but I don't think I remember it being as confusing to learn as the zebra genetics. Ugh.

Question: This pertains to Owl finches. A visual normal owl male/fawn and a normal hen? Will all young look normal, but be split to fawn? Is that correct? To get visual fawn owls, what must I do?

You will get some visual fawn females and normal split to fawn.

a full visual fawn male and a normal owl female
will give offspring:

50% Fawn Females
50% Normal/Fawn Males


a split to fawn owl male and a visual fawn female
25% Normal Females
25% Normal/Fawn Males
25% Fawn Females
25% Fawn Males


and of course both fawn will give you 100% fawn offspring

My Fawn BC were fairly light. I have started again with breeding and will likely pair those parents again to get the Fawn BC. My first pair is a fawn BB OB male with a normal BB who is possibly split to eumo, BC and FF. Got back from vacation and they are sitting on 5 eggs. Should be an interesting set of chicks. It is so exciting to have eggs again...can't wait to see the chicks! Cindy we should talk about what we have and what we are shooting for in our breeding as we seem to going in the same direction and we could share eggs and diversify our flock genetics.

Well after spending time in my bird room I am trying to decide on the BC fawns or fawn penguins. I have 3 sets of penguin offspring and fawns (split to OB and BB) and otheres that are just fawn....trying to decide which to do!

Funny you should be thinking of fawn penguins because yesterday I just set up my only remaining penguin male with a fawn female who is /BB, /OB, and maybe split to pied and BC. We are really both looking to go in the same direction with our birds!

This even gets funnier...the male fawn I will be using with a female penguin is split OB/BB. The and for the male penguin, he gets a female is fawn with her grandfather being split to BB as well!!!

Lori, pied is recessive and is passed to all the young, when pairing a pied or split to pied with a penguin....you will loose all orange in the cheek and flank area. For some reason the pied works against the orange in the penguin mutations.

I bought a crested penguin male it had no cheeks and flanks about a yr ago, I sent a picture of it to efinch, asked how to get it back. He told me it was pied and pied ruins the look of the penguin. So the crested boy went to go live with a friend who was working with pied and crested so he fit right in since he could not be used for penguin stock.

What you will get if the fawn is split to OB and BB would be Male offspring that are split to fawn, no visuals...the orange may be more widespred on the head and chest.....but if you add BC to the mix the BC will fight the orange and can remove all or some of the orange and pied with remove it and body color as well.

I like it! My BB keep laying, abandoning, breaking egg, I have 3 eggs under my societies, with these I will set up more bb. I can get you BB this spring!
