Hi there, I am currently hand feeding 3 zebra finches, almost 7 weeks old. I am mostly likely going to want to keep one, I would keep all, but I have a feeling I might have two females and one male and wont want them breeding. (All related). Is there any other male bird I could potentially keep with my zebra male? I wouldnt want him to be lonely, and cannot reintroduce to the adult flight cage as they wont take nicely to the babies. I could do another male zebra if a few males could get along. I just do not want another breeder pair at this time.
Thanks for any input!

2 males "might" fight.
With zebras it is very individual and unpredictable. Some will get along fine, others will be aggressive, and others will FIGHT. I have also had some turn from friendly to very aggressive.
A LARGER bird would probably be good, as the size would intimidate the zebra into behaving...I think.
Check the Finch Info Center on the left. Go into the species section and look at the "aggressive" birds.
And do NOT put a nest in the cage, as that might trigger nesting behavior in the zebra, which could get quite aggressive. I had a barely weaned zebra chick turn aggressive against the 3 society finches that it went thru quarantine with, when it decided to claim the new nest for itself. That did not last long, I removed him from the societies cage, as unacceptable behavior. And he was put in with the adult zebras, to fend for himself.
I don't mix my zebras with any other species, and to control unplanned breeding, M and F are kept separate.

I had an agressive male and i put him with a male green singer and he behaved very well. I also have housed two male zebra finches together with no problem either it really just depends alot on the personality of your finches. If you house him with other birds just keep a close eye on them.
