Why not goldbreasts, Cindy?cindy wrote:Nelissa, my owls are very busy all the time. They fly back and forth, rarely are they all still. They get the same diet as all the other finches seed mix nd pellets, eggfodds (favorite is grated egg with grated carrots and shaved broccoli tops).
If you have them flighted and they are busy it should not be an issue. I would be concerned if the cage was on the small side and the other pair of birds stressed them to the point of the owls sitting or retreating.
Silverbills, Cordons, Stars would do nicely in there with them. The only ones I would not mix in and this is based on my own experience are the Goldbreasts.

Re: What to put with owls?
Goldbreasts, although small, can be bullies. My gb's took over my owl nest and tossed babies. I had to move them to another cage. I recommend owls with the fires, ocw, Spice, or rccb's. My owls and Stars would be territorial with each other, so they could not share a flight. And as stated before, the Society's are nest hogs.
I found my owls were not comfortable with too many other finches, they do better with a small group, like four or in pairs. Let us know what you end up doing.

I think from all the input I've gotten, I am leaning toward one of the CB varieties, if I decide to get anything in the near future.
Are there any major behavioral differences between the BCCBs, RCCBs, and the BBCBs?
I know the hens tend to look very similar between the subspecies, so is there a reliable way to determine what I am looking at?

Blue Cap hens are usually the easiest. Their beaks are not as pointy and there is not a lot of dark color on them. The beak is a lot more pink.
The other 2 are more difficult hens are the issues. In my experience, the female blue breast have the darkest beak of the 3. The blue on the breast varies so much from bird to bird....in my limited experience.

My Gouldian's do great with Owls. The Goulds don't pay them much attention and are just laid back and do their own thing.
My parrots also do well with them. They are not that nosey and have lots of energy like the owls, but they seem to use different flight space (if that makes sense). They also like to eat similar things and share the food tray and bath bowls.

my uncle knows a guy who breeds cordons, out in rochester, if you want me to get you a number or email let me know. Also, the petsmart near the elmwood village will be carrying RCCB later this yearnelloyello11 wrote:I think from all the input I've gotten, I am leaning toward one of the CB varieties, if I decide to get anything in the near future.
