New finches - darn I hope they breed for me at that price!!!

For more specific questions related to the many varieties of captive finches.

No imports are allowed in at all. A few years backs they allowed in a heap of parrots etc. but no finches :x . There is a push at the moment to try to get some new blood in, but it is only a slim chance. It is a shame, as many species go through 'trends' where they will be popular for a few years and then they lose popularity again some years later. For us, this can be a problem as numbers dwindle quickly and before you know it, they could be gone.

Sad stuff, It would be a shame if importing restriction lead to the "extinction" of some of your species there. Sometimes we don't realize how lucky we are with what we have.

There was a ban on importing finches in South Africa too, this was lifted beginning of last year and we saw a dramatic drop in some species prices, but it's just a matter of time before the ban on wild caught birds is imposed again. Various government groups are rallying to impose the ban again, so we're trying to build up stock for when that does happen.

Maybe I'll buy myself a yacht and sail over a 100 pairs or so, just need a place to stash them, anyone interested?

I know a few breeders that have had them for a long time (years) and they are trying to keep their numbers high. but with no fresh blood it will become a problem sooner rather than later (never would be best).
these breeders dont sell any birds they swap amongst themselves to try and keep the blood lines relatively clean.

I've only had them a couple of days and already they are taking over my life.

I'm building them a new aviary. Will keep you guys up to date.

I've cleared some 3 truck loads of bushes this weekend to make space.

Trust me, the hardest part of building another aviary is not the building and clearing of the area, it's convincing the wife that we NEED another aviary.

Luckily the finch thing is catching on, she won't admit it but I catch her occasionally staring and sitting next to them. So it's just a matter of time before I've completely turned her to the "dark side".
