Goldbreasts Youngsters with others

Post by tidnab42 » Sat Aug 09, 2008 10:15 pm

I have a pair of young goldbreasts that were born in April that I'm ready to seperate from the parents into this gi-normous cage I built especially for them. They are so stinking small they flew right thru the bars of the cage when they originally fledged the nest. I had to wrap the cage with netting to prevent this from happening. I want to hear opionions about putting some other finches with them. There will be no nests in this cage. What do you think of 2 goldbreasts, 1 owl (his mate died in the nest this week, eggbound :( ) and 3 baby cordon blues once they are older. I have societies rearing the cordon blues, it's so cool. The first cordon's that I have had SURVIVE. The Blue parents will not rear the young EVER, they have thrown everybaby that was ever born. So I swiped the eggs this time and this has worked.

Anyhow....
2 Goldbreasts, 1 owl and 3 blues?
This cage is definately for Goldbreasts, so at the very least those guys are going in there. If neither of these are hospitable, what could? Socities babies,?

Let me know

Hi, Cinde - First, congrats on getting some Cordon Bleu babies. They are notorious for abandoning or tossing, so you were smart to put them with Societies. I've been told that not all Societies will raise CBs, so those Societies are keepers. Are they Blue-capped or Red-cheeked?

The juvie Goldbreasts, male Owl, and juvie CBs should be fine in a cage together. Of course, any mixing of birds always has to be watched at first, as there can be exceptions, but these species are all passive. You will have to watch for your CBs as they get their adult colors. If you have 3 males or 3 females, it should be OK, but if you have two males and one female, the two males may start squabbling over the female (I know, it's their sister, but they don't care!).

Great

Oh Good.. I am keeping a watchful eye on the baby Cordon Blues. Sorry - But boy are they little ugly dudes. They are blue capped. I am still concerned over nutrition that these babies might be lacking. I se the crops from time to time depending on the stretch. They are always begging for food and socities do feed. I'm going to video it again. I did once but it was a bit jumpy. But I know the blues should be eating worms and they aren't. So I got some insectivorous feast yesterday and some bugs and berries and we'll see. Someone was eating it. But I don't think the chicks are eating yet. They really fledged the nest so early, 8-10 days and they were outta there. So I feared they wouldn't survive. They would not let me put them back into the nest. I tried. They found there way back in after 2 days. Now they sleep in there with socities at night.

Sociteies never care if I mess with anything in the cage. I even cleaned out the nest and re-nested it. It was so super nasty, and they seemed to be thankful. Because they went right in for some re-adjusting.

Now I have to think about banding these little dudes. Argh!

Banding the goldbreasts are virtually impossible. Every time we banded they flew off the leg. Week after week. Finally one has a band. The other does not. I'm going to attempt the reband when I move them out today. Their parents are nesting again so I need to make this move and give them some privacy.

Lots to do today.

Thanks for your input, I feel better about doing this.

B CAMP, I posted a photo of a Goldbreasted fledgling once. It is under Species, thread titled Goldbreasted Waxbill Fledgling Size. It is not a very good picture, all blurry, but the best I could get at the time. They are so incredibly tiny. My Goldbreasts took a while to settle down before they got interested in breeding, I mean months.

On the BCCBs, once you see a pair, you can see the difference. The males have blue on the whole top of their head, from beak back to behind the eyes, like to the neck. The females have tan, or light brown, on the top of their heads, plus their overall color is more muted. If your hens are laying eggs, that is a good sign. If you can swap one of them for a male, or get two males, you might get them breeding.

Cinde - Are you giving the CBs (along with Societies) eggfood? Another good thing is nestling food, you can mix the two together or offer them separately, but the eggfood provides the protein they need, and my babies all tried sampling eggfood before just about anything. Also, spray millet gives them a small seed that they can manage.

Absolutely egg food.... Everyone in my bird room gets egg food.
and egg shells too! They love em. and Millet..

I'm fumbling around trying to figure out how to upload my pictures. Keeps telling me they are too big. NOT file size, but dimensions. I have some awesome close ups of the chicks....

Here in Italy all African waxbills are unavailable cause from any years is not possible have cickens (and live birds) from Asia and Africa.
I Know that a girl has a female alone and she could give her to me..but she's in another city and it's not easy meet her.
Perhaps I can have that female bird in September cause a friend of mine has to go in that city..let's wish!
Your chick pictures are very nice.
Wich kind of nest did they use?

P.S.
They are my males!

beautiful birds you have there Dario, you may want to clip their nails though as they look to be a bit to long. maybe put something into the cage to help them wear the nails away naturally

Goldbreast Nest

Post by tidnab42 » Wed Aug 20, 2008 10:25 pm

My goldbreast pair used a small wicker finch nest. They would not even think about going near a plastic nest. They used Jute, sisal and the cocoa fibers, they seemed to like the cocoa fibers. The parents of these babies are nesting again and I just moved the babies into a huge home made cage, they look so small in there. But they definately will not get out of this wire. It's plastic coated small squares. I forget what the heck it's called. From Menards. Comes in a roll. I will take a picture of the blues and the goldbreasts again tomorrow. They seem all grown up already. The goldbreasts were born around April 15th and the Blues about 1 month ago. The coloring is not complete yet, but it might be 2 girls for the goldbreasts.
Sorry I can't share with you Dario.!

One of my Goldbreast pairs actually used a clear plastic hang-on bathtub! This cage had an opening on the front for a nestbox, but I hung a wicker nest back in the corner, so hung the bathtub to cover up the hole. Of course, they proceeded to fill the bathtub with hay and coco fiber.

Thank you for the informations.
In my aviary there are yet a a small wicker finch nest, 3 plastic nests, and 3 gouldian finch nests (double room). When (and if) I''ll have the female I'll give them all the necessary things.. :)
