Here in Italy, with the export ban those kind of birds are totally vanished.
Looking for them is very very hard (or impossible?).
No more Waxbills in our Petsmarts.
Buy them only if youre sure to bred them...as seen as you can find them too, don't be stupid as like us.

Some Strawberry groups live here in the wild, heirs of birds escaped from captivity many years ago. I heared that someone is catching them with big nets. Perhaps we can use them for start all over again with this bird...but not as like in the past.

You're right, Dario, we need to be careful here in the US. The import ban has been lifted for now, but most people feel this is just a temporary thing, and soon the doors will close again, and this time for good. So whatever we have in this country will have to be the basis for future birds. As the numbers decline, then the gene pool gets smaller and smaller. Quite a few people are breeding some of the harder-to-find species, so hopefully, they will be available for future generations.

the scary part is how will the birds be in say 20 years when the gene pool is almost unviable, will governments then allow some more birds in or is it going to be a case of too bad. I sure hope not.
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

You are lucky...
Here the doors closed some years ago and no more opened.
I'm trying, with a friend of mine (to pay birds 50/50..now they are exensive!), to breed all waxbills we can find.
In This moment we have in aviary 4 helena waxbills...and in this moment they have 4 chicks in their nest. Probably the only helena chicks of all Italy.
Here you can see one of them!

We have also 1 Orang Cheeked Male (no females available for him :( ), and 2 Goldbreasts both Male too..
For them we have found a female that in this moment is in Florence and, if all goes good, she'll be here in October. Let's wish..

Best of wishes to you on your venture for the female. I'm sure you will keep us all updated.
