Parrot Finch

Post by pure_birds » Wed Sep 10, 2008 5:18 pm

I have them in a 5X4X7 flight along with 2 pairs of Long Tail parrakeets ( Bourke & Splendids) No body bothers each other. Very prolific as they hatch 19 chicks so far this year. I've had pertty good luch sexing them using the old Dove / Pigeon method. I use my pinky finger to judge the spacing next to vent. The wide separation mean Female, alomost closed is a male. I hit it right about 98% of the time. I'm in the process of biulding more averies in order to expand into collection more finch varieties.

Your parrott finches had 19 chicks? That's great....what species are they? What secrets do you have to share?
I don't have any finches right now but I used to, I'll try to provide my knowledge around the forum

I have Forbes parrot finch I purchased from a friend who has since passed away but operated a quarrantine station, I've been very lucky to have known another gentlemen who kept and bred parrot Finchs. Learned his method. Can't say its a secret' But they get fresh fruit, greens & sprinkled with powdered vitamins/minerals, egg bread, canary breeding formula, gounded oat seed, I also sprout cockatiel mix and mix my own finch mix which is coated with wheat germ oil daily. The averies have miniture trees / cotton tail grass in pots to give them lots of privacy. Its seems like alot of work but once you do this daily it becomes second nature.
Following this process has paid off in breeding high end Mutation parrotkeets.

Hope this helps
