Goldbreasted waxbill question

Post by atarasi » Thu Oct 02, 2008 5:05 pm

It's been two weeks with having a pair of GB waxbills.
Everytime I set one foot into the bird room, they freak out and fly around their cage complete afraid of me.

Does this species ever calm down? This current narotic behavior is driving me nuts. Should I have just stuck with Gouldians?

I have a pair that I have had for a little over a year. The first six months, I seldom saw them because they stayed in the tree. Now they are out and even when I go in to clean , they fly around me. I think they will calm down, but they will never be anything like the gouldians. They are very skittish.

gold breasted & orange breasted are almost the same bird, I have the latter. mine were very nervous and flighty for the first few months in the aviary but have now settled down. when I put out fresh mealworm they come down within a couple of feet of me waiting to be thrown a couple which they duly sit and eat (I guess this is there way of getting a couple of extra worms :D ). they only fly off if I make a sudden move. my rccb's dont come any closer than 6 feet and wait for me to leave the aviary before eating
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

Mine only freaked out for the first couple of days. Mind you, they are in the living room, so are exposed to my comings and goings a lot. They had to get used to it pretty quickly. I even vacuum around the cage and they just keep eating!

What seems to help is definitely all the treats I put in the cage. They are so anxious to see what's in there that they'll come back to the perch to see what's in there, even when I'm standing by the cage. But they are still more nervous than the society's were. I guess they are learning to "tolerate" me, but they are never going to be as relaxed when I'm near as the Societies were..

I have three pairs and they are all fairly calm around me. They're pretty used to me putting my hand in their cage, though.

My Goldbreasts are nervous birds, but they usually settle down. Many of the GBs available right now are imports, understandably more nervous. They may take quite a while to calm down.

I absolutely think you're right Sally. The guy at the bird mart said he purchased the stock he was selling from Canada and California. I believe he acquired them from a shipper.

I think I have someone who might purchase these two from me. I guess I'll just stick with the Australian species.
