Re: Which Species Would You Nominate?
I posted a response a little while ago on your other thread. Here it is.
Art3mie . Hi, regarding which species to get, I think you should get society finches! They are very calm, have great personalities and are very fun to keep. They are also very intelligent They do breed very easily, so if you just want to enjoy them 2 males is the way to go. That's what I have:
Good luck!!!!

Re: Which Species Would You Nominate?
As there your first finches i would also have to recommend societies, my first birds were a pair of red faced parrot finches followed by 2 pairs of societies, the societies were obviously first to breed successfully and gave me so much enjoyment just seeing eggs hatch, chicks being reared and weaned. They are such easy going/tolerant birds, with it being my first time breeding finches i was so curious as to what was going on in nest that i was constantly inspecting it, they just put up with my intrusions and carried on rearing their chicks. Then i got more adventurous after numerous attempts of getting the parrot finches to successfully incubate/rear chicks i finally placed parrot finch eggs under the societies which they also reared successfully producing my first non society fledglings.
Since then and thanks to the societies proving the eggs/chicks are viable i sorted out what i was doing wrong and shortly afterwards started breeding parent reared chicks.
I know the societies are not as exotic/colourful looking as other finches but if you want to get into the hobby they are what will get you hooked and keep you entertained. I'd never have my birdroom without society finches as i consider them the most valuable commodity to the hobby.
There's nothing worse than spending big bucks on a pair of finches and having them dying on you due to inexperience, you can't go wrong with society finches to start with and they'll also be the last birds you ever get tired of.

Hi.
You obviously have some favorites in mind.
I have never owned any of the ones you mentioned, but I can see some Owls and Strawberries in my future. The Owls are super cute. And the Strawberries when in breeding colours are very attractive. Regarding the European Golds, I have heared that the males have a lovely song, but have also heared that they can be difficult to sex and not easy to keep.
I guess my question would be, if you have ever owned Finches or any birds before?
Some of the easiest beginner Finches are Societies ( or Bengalese) Sweet personalities, cute little songs, and different colours to choose from.
Can't beat Canaries for song. Different mutations, attractive colours and pleasent personalities.
Then there are the Green and Gray Singers with very pretty songs.
When it comes to looks, oh my goodness... the sky is the limit. It does come down to personal preferences really and doing research regarding care, feeding, living conditions and so on.
Personally I started with one Canary. Then came the Zebra Finches, the Societies, the Gouldians, the Shaft Tails, the Green Singers, the Cut Throats, the Stars, the Parrot Finches, the Orange Cheek Waxbills, the Red billed Africans Fires, the Red Eared Waxbills and lately a couple of Budgies. What can I say???
Good luck in your choices.

Re: Which Species Would You Nominate?
Appearance: Gouldians, owls, cordon bleus, firefinches, lavenders, parrotfinches
Behavior: Parrotfinches, lavenders, canaries, societies
Intelligence: In my experience, they could all fit into this category, especially javas
Song: canaries, cordon bleus, gouldians, societies
Overall, my favorite of all my birds is my lavender waxbill pair and my male timbrado canary. They are so intelligent, personable and just plain cute.

I find red-cheeked cordon bleus among the prettiest of all, myself.
Society finches have fascinating and hilarious personalities and they are nearly fearless, they get my vote there.
I believe my Javas and my canaries - particularly the male - exhibit the most intelligent mannerisms.
I believe the European goldfinch to have the prettiest song.

For appearance: European goldfinch, canary
For behavior, intelligence, and song: canary. Canaries are domesticated and tend to be calm around people. They are clever little birds that learn quickly. I don't think any finch comes close to the canary in song. There are so many different types of canary breeds that have different songs you're bound to find one that appeals to you.
