New baby Java Sparrow !!!

Post by Nipper06 » Wed Nov 26, 2014 3:37 pm

A while back, my female Java died from egg binding. To provide some company to her 10 year old mate, I bought a Spice Finch that needed rescuing and they became friends. Now that Java recently died so I had a very lonely Spice Finch! So I found this young Java for sale for $25 at a recent bird fair. The 2 birds get along great in a large cage - and both get free flight time in my 18 X 20 foot sun room, which is filled with plants. Both birds quickly figured out how to return to their cage on their own, so I frequently let them out to explore!

I love your sun room. I wish my birdies have something like that. Sounds like your guys have it made. :-)

Your Spice Finch is beautiful, and the baby Java is a cutie. Just curious, but why that particular combination? Why not two Javas, or two Spices?

When the first Java died, I was considering Spice Finches as an alternative - but then when the second Java died, I decided not to get another Spice Finch because I was afraid they would breed and I would have to deal with finding homes for the babies. And Spice Finches tend to be very cheap, maybe making it possibly harder to find good homes (I agonize enough with finding homes for my pricier Gouldians). But I might eat my words and breed either or both species at some point.

And I thought they would get along since they are both mannikins. And they do, despite the size difference. Both are very steady species that learn fast. I can walk right by their cage and they don't usually flutter away. And mannikins are pretty smart. I can release them in my sun room and they go back in their cage by themselves.

Love that sun room! Of course, I'd go nuts and fill it with cages, and it wouldn't look nearly so attractive. What lucky little birds to get to fly free in that room.

How sweet!
He's so lovely!

I love, love, love Javas! They're so smart and clever.
And their Puffin-like looks slay me! Such attractive birds.

I'm happy your little Spice has a friend again!
I had a couple Spices -- two females, I believe now. They were among the loveliest, most amiable birds on the planet! They just got along with everyone beautifully.

Your sun room is pretty.

However, you know a spice and a Java will breed just as readily as two of either species, right?
