RED FACED CRIMSON WINGED FINCH

Post by lovezebs » Sat Dec 27, 2014 4:27 am

Hi All.

Came across a picture of what is called a Red Faced Crimson Winged Finch. It is a lovely little bird.

My questions are, is it extinct? Is it being bred somewhere in captivity? Has anyone been able to find any of them in the wild? What happened to this beautiful little bird, to wipe it out/almost wipe it out?

We still get them here in SA occasionally, at a very high price. Beautiful bird but very hard to find and breed. They come from a tiny area and trapping has probably been a huge part of their decline. The Shelley's crimson wing is even more rare.

Here is some more info about them in the wild

Thanks Roxanne.

Why are folks down there not breeding them like mad? When these guys are so rare, almost extinct, you would think there would be major conservation efforts to save them.

They are so pretty, it would be such a shame to lose them forever. Found a couple of pictures. Apparantly one type hasn't been seen for years....
