Can Societies Foster Canaries?

Post by Sheather » Mon Dec 29, 2014 1:00 pm

My canary Steve was for a time with my male Walter during which period she was mounted a number of times. Walter ended up beating Steve up, so he was removed - now Steve has laid an egg, presumably one of a few coming now, and is not paying the slightest mind to it. She did not lay it in a nest but right on the cage floor, but I believe it may be fertile. I have the flock of society finches and several whom I know will incubate the egg if I gave them a nest to do so but are societies able to feed canaries in the event they hatch or do the young have too dissimilar begging patterns? Is it worth attempting? I would be heartbroken if they hatched the babies but then couldn't feed them.

Sorry Dylan, I have heard that Societies can't raise canaries. Something to do with the way canaries begs for food in an upright manner. However I checked Yahoo answers and there is a guy that says that his societies has successfully fostered canaries.

Is it possible to force Steve to sit, as in put her in a cage with a nest and her egg in the hopes that she will catch a clue and then lay and sit in there? That seems kind of cruel, though.

I would also have a hard time if they got incubated and hatched but then weren't cared for, so I'd prefer to not let them develop at all in that case.

I really am not sure about this. I would think that they probably can't, maybe because of the size difference. Interested to see what everyone else has to say.

Hi Dylan.
I recall hearing as well something to the effect, that Socies and Canaries are a no go. How about your two Javas? I have no idea if this would work or not, it's just a thought.

Why is a female canary named Steve? Lol.

If you try letting other birds incubate the egg, I'm jot sure if they're going to provide the same warmth and even if it hatched, they wouldn't be able to provide the same diet and nutritional needs for the bird. You'd have to find a way to feed the bird yourself and the nest would be overcrowded.

Put a nest in with the canary and put her egg with it. Many canaries do not sit on the eggs until two or three eggs have been laid. Personally, I would rather the egg gets abandoned then going through the trouble of having an egg hatch and then a baby chick is abandoned :( .

She was sold to me as a male and assumed so until very recently.

Almost all bird's eggs are incubated at the same temperatures.

My societies eat identical diets to my canaries and are experienced parents. I slipped the egg into a nest, hung it up, and it was immediately adopted by... well, all of them, which surprised even me considering nests have been out of the room for a month and nobody had been prepped at all - as well as it being only a single egg. But my guy are really super parents, I guess! They're taking turns in pairs or trios to keep warm the new blue super egg (which they must think has appeared as a sign from the Gods or something..)

I'm going to see what happens.

Sounds like my societies. They will adopt and care for, at any time, anyone's egg or eggs. Hoping for the best!

Seems poor unborn Steve x Walter junior fell out of the nest and broke when everyone shot out of bed sometime this morning. Aw.

Oh good grief. Poor little egg, just couldn't catch a break.

~Elana~

Oh crap, that didn't come out right at all. I meant to say that poor egg baby had no luck at all.
