European Greenfinches help

Post by Paddington » Tue Apr 07, 2015 5:00 pm

Hello,
I recently found a place to buy European Greenfinches but I am having trouble finding any information on them.

Do they breed easily? Are they much different from European Goldfinches?

Hi Paddington - welcome to the forum! I grew up in Germany where the goldfinches and greenfinches are plentiful year round. I've kept and bred European goldfinches and love their song, beautiful colors and agility. I've never kept greenfinches. They don't have much of a song and their call is very repetitive and monotonous (at least in my opinion). Check them out on Youtube and see what you think.
Sorry I can't help you any more.

Thanks for the help! Maybe there is a reason they are not widespread lol, perhaps I will have to write my own guide!

Wow that was really helpful, especially about the dangers of "going light" would anyone know where to get the Sulphadimidine anti-biotics? could you get some from a vet? Or online?

Hi Paddington,

I have kept Greenfinches for years, And have never had 1 going light. They are hard as nails. Bulletproof I have found.
In the off season they get Plain Canary seed and broccoli twice a week, As I start to get them into breeding condition I add in some red apple twice a week and increase the greens to 4 times a week. If you have any dandelions growing around near you pick them(wash them) and then feed them to the greenies as much as you can. This really gets them conditioned fast. Eggfood is also supplemented normally when I see the hen starting to build her nest.

You can leave the cock in with the hen he generally will help raise the young, I always remove the cock though to stop any chance of him killing young or tossing chicks.

Hope this helps,

Any other questions let me know. :)
