I need help sexing Gouldian

Post by Jude1322 » Thu Jun 18, 2015 5:25 pm

Please, if anyone can help me with figuring out sex of this bird, I would greatly appreciate it. Looks like a hen to me, but does the hoppy dance. Stands erect and hops up and down, but I didn't hear any sound come out.

In the picture, and I must say they aren't always that accurate, the belly color looks very dark so I would guess male. The breast looks like it's a very pale purple which could be a Lilac Breast or a "dirty" White Breast that may turn all white next molt. Usually breast that pale purple are Lilac Breast hens. The other interesting thing is the head, it clearly looks like a Yellow Head but it also seems to have a red tipped beak which would be a Red Head.
If you have another known hen or male compare that belly, light yellow is hen darker yellow is male.
Interesting indeed

. I put my two new ones together to compare under bellys. I put one of my other hens in with the red head, and he did his mating dance to her, but I put this yellow back in with red head and no reaction at all. At least I got a pic of them side by side to compare. The under belly is definitely lighter.

Male on left and hen on right
It looks very much like the tip of her beak is red, if this is so she is a RH and not YH

It is red tipped beak. Thank you for your help. It was sold to me as a y/h hen, but it was doing the hoppy dance which confused me. I am familiar with greens but this is my first experience with y/b.
