Sexing society finches

I've begun looking into society finches as a possible companion for my zebra who was being bullied. My problem is, is that I'm not familiar with their sounds and songs. I've read(and been told) that the only way to tell a male from a female is that the male sings. Is that all I need to look out for? I had went onto YouTube to find videos of male societies singing but when I'd read the comments, I came across people saying that the bird in the video wasn't a society.

Is just singing all I need to listen for(I want a male) or is there anything else I should be on the lookout for? If anyone has any videos of society males singing, I'd love to see them.

Yup, males sing and not females. The males puff out their chest and sing away, you'll know it when you see it.

Thanks, Debbie. I had read on Yahoo! Answers(I know, not a very reliable source) that both males and females sing. The only difference is that females sound a bit different than the males so that confused me.

some go by the same type of physical sexing we do for javas... this is a chart some use. Some swear by it and others separate each bird, place it in a small cage opposite a hen to see if it sings.

Thanks Cindy. I'll save that chart and take it with me when I go to the pet store. I'll also wait to hear singing too, just in case.

This is a Bengalese/society male singing. I have been wanting to video mine singing but he hates the camera and just does a mad whistle.

I know this will work though, if you go to the cage of birds and play this video, the males will sing for sure. I used an mp3 file of one singing to ensure I got a male and a female myself!

When I played this video just now to check it, my own Mr Ben started singing away!

This species is known as a Society finch in the U.S. and Canada (for the most part), but it is known as a Bengalese finch in most of the rest of the world.

There are several species that have different names according to what part of the world you are in, which is a great case for using scientific names.
