isobea, I haven't heard from the store owner about the 2 on the loose. I may pop in there tomorrow to see if he caught them. If not, I'll ask him to hand me a net!

This store is FULL of high quality bird seed, bird perches, bird cages, seed cups, baths, swings, nesting material, hand-feeding formula, etc. AND he's less than 5 minutes from my house. Rough on the wallet #-o

w.l. - No, no, no, I don't want to catch them (I would have to add on to my aviary). I used to have some a few years ago and they did perfectly fine outside during the winter months. I'm just concerned about these young ones having to go through the molt when it will get quite a bit colder during the next two months. Since this is the first year I have seen them in our yard, I don't know if they always breed so late in the season.

Shannylee - in a way I am very happy we don't have any really good pet stores around here (less temptation). The few birds they carry nowadays are mostly budgies, maybe three or four societies and the same number of zebras and two or three hookbills. So I usually get food through our bird club and buy birds from (or sell to) other club members.

Iso,

I think if you stick a perch of some sort under the awning of the house where the sun hits during the day time, and offer them food, they probably should be ok.

Shannylee

Sounds like you have a nice Pet Shop close by Sharon.

My favorite Pet Shop, used to be closer to me where I lived before, now it's a bit further, but i still try to visit it once a week or so, when the weather is normal.

I'd remind the fellow about these two little birds. If he's forgotten about them, they may starve to death in the middle of all that bagged food.

lovezebs - Elana, you know spice finches have 'sleeping nests', don't you? In fact the two spicies I had for several years slept in their nest (furnished with all kinds of fibers and feathers) even in the summer months. One time, late afternoon in the winter, I checked on my birds and couldn't find the spice finches. When I glanced at their nest, I noticed that there was no opening visible. They had gone inside and pulled feathers in front of the opening, literally 'closing the door' behind them. They did that every time the nights got colder than they liked - no bird brains here.

But to get back to your original suggestion, I am assuming these wild ones also have sleeping nests somewhere in the neighborhood.

lovezebs, I'm sure that my bird shop guy hasn't forgotten about the 2 on the loose. He said that he will stay after hours, in the dark, many times in order to catch a bird on the loose. He just waits until they roost and picks them up. He also puts out catch-cages. He has a true heart for birds. He's not the normal "pet store". :)

Shannylee

That's good to know.

Have you heared anything back from him about the two little escape artists?
