New Birds

Post by nixity » Mon Jun 08, 2009 10:04 pm

Attended (as a vendor) the Hudson Valley Caged Bird Society annual Bird Mart this past Sunday.

There were a lot of birds there I had yet to see offered at other shows/marts:

Quite a few Melba Finches
St. Helena's, Orange Breasts, Red Winged Pytlia's (this is the first time I've EVER seen these anywhere!)

Also, the same vendor with these birds had some Black and White Mannikins.. they were so adorable! Very small, almost Strawberry size, but a boxier shape.. like a miniature black and white society. Loved them, but.. I have decided I really need to just concentrate on the Goulds for right now before exploring other species :)

There were a lot of vendors with Gouldians there, but one woman, a very small scale private breeder, had some birds I just couldn't take my eyes off.

I ended up getting a RH LB/WB Normal Male and a related hen, a RH Purple/White or Lilac Normal Hen.
They are both beefcakes.. really large.
The hen has a little more molting to do, and looks to maybe be a little "stuck" in her head, but I'm okay with it, I know it'll molt out eventually.. she was too good to pass up.
They are both from January 2009 clutches.

I love that male Tiffany! :) And red heads are not my favorite of the three head colors but this male has it all going on!

Have you given them names yet?

Donna - I know you will see this post :) This is an excellent example of the lilac chest on a Gouldian.

Those are stunning. The breeder may have been small time but it sure looks like she knew what she was doing...and definately fed them well :D They are beefcakes :!:

They are beautiful birds Tiffany. Yes, Misty I see the difference. I am sure that my (yours) is not a lilac. But still a beauty! I even put it in my avatar.

LOL.. of COURSE!

The female I named Moira.. the male I'm calling JB because "JellyBean" is too much of a mouthful ;)

I just look at him and go.. JELLYBELLY!
He just reminds me of a jelly bean for some reason..
