2 Bonded Society Finches and An Invader

Post by Marcos » Sun Sep 06, 2009 11:53 pm

Yep. That's about it.

Well, before I start this thread, I just want to say thanks to this forum I have learned a lot. I signed up 2 years ago, but I have not participated much until I had the need to do so in another thread earlier. Anyway........onto my question.

Invadoer? Well it's more like a potential invader. Someone called me just this evening and asked me if I would be interested in taking one society from his clutch. It's about 3 months old. Here is the problem, I have no knowledge or experience about how my two bonded finches will view this. I certainly see my cage comfortable housing one more society, but will there be ramifications. Or how likely will there be a problem. Will the new comer be seen as an invader? Or will one of the two bonded finches attack the other one. After all, these are birds, and with that said, nothing is predictable.

On the other hand I "hear" that societies are called societies because of their rather open minded and accepting nature. I am sure that a couple of you would have an answer that will provide me some direction. I am inclined not to accept the little one but if most of you give me the green light, I might just give it a go. I dony ask for guarantees.....just your educated opinion and experiences.

Hi! Welcome back to the forum...

I think with society finches you would have no problems.
Most people keep three together for fostering. I have three and they all love each other..... They all sleep in a nest together.

Go for it!!! :D

I agree with Donna, usually Socities will get along with each other. The more, the merrier for them!

I have cages of Societies set up for fostering, most cages have 3 males, and they get along just fine. One cage that I thought had 3 males turned out to be one female, 2 males--still get along with no problems.

Well, its nice to be back. Thanks again for the help. If you people dont know, I dont know who would. Yea, I might do it. Now that I know it's not detrimental, I will probably go for it.

He also offered me a Bronzewing Mannikin, (another young one) but that one looks like he would be bullied by my two societies. That bird is so small.

Some time back I thought of buying a thrid finch.....some pretty one, but I was worried about how how my bonded ones would react.

So if I understand you all correctly, I can add a third finch but it would be best if I stay within the same species. Right?

Bronzewing Mannikins can be very tough for their size! The biggest problem would be if any of your Societies would be a hen, or the Bronzewing might be a hen, as they can crossbreed and I believe the resulting hybrid could be fertile. I once had a hybrid Society/BWM cross, and he got along fine with everyone till he was exposed to a Society hen. Then he became very aggressive, to the point of taking out an eye on the male Society that shared the same cage.

Wow....Sally Im sorry that happened. That surely had to be stressful for you. If that happened I would be upset knowing that I was the one that caused the problem by putting them together.

Well, if my friend offers me another bird, what other finches would be acceptable to put in the cage with my 2 societies?
