why DNA by blood ?? Here you can send only 1 or 2 feathers from the tail to some compagnies and in 3 days you get the 100% results , no matter what kinda bird , only they charge you around 10 usd per test .... there must be compagnies in the USA that do the same .

Here, the two companies I'm familiar with also do feather testing. They require 8-10 breast feathers, I believe, and those feathers have to be pulled so there is flesh on the ends. I have also read somewhere, and I can't remember where now, that someone sent in feather samples and got incorrect results, so blood is supposed to be more accurate. Prices also tend to be higher here--$17-24.50, with blood testing being several dollars cheaper than feather testing.

I caught up nine juveniles the other day, one by one, put them in this larger flight cage, and never thought to put different colored split bands on each one. #-o #-o So tonight I'm sitting in a chair by their cage, when I hear a juvie song. Looked over, and here is one of clutch #1 singing away. But which one?! I could kick myself!! There is no way now that I can reach in, catch that little male, and slip a blue band on him--they all fly up into a group when I open a door.

Sally,
The same thing happened with the parrot finch chicks. The young male would sing and if you tried to catch him...well needless to say....impossible  I now house each new chick in a cage to themselves :D they are side by side so not lonely...yet easier to sex.... if they will just sing while I am watching. Many times I hear them singing away. I go in the parrot room and sit...they all hush and watch me.... go figure. I have 5 new red throats that fledged 2 days ago....I am running out of individual cages....so maybe I will double band them as I catch them up. Thanks for the heads up reminder :D

Candace, have you ever tried setting up a baby tv monitor in the room or a web cam, maybe number or tag the cage so you can see them sing and tell who is doing it without them seeing you.

It has to be frustrating to know they are doing it, go in there and there is such silence you can hear a pin drop.

Cindy, the thing with these Parrot finches when the males trill, they don't really open their mouths so it is hard to tell by visual. You almost have to isolate them by area. Once I hear the trill I figure out what side of the room it is, then what rack, then which cage. Then if I watch carefully I can see the slight mouth open and the slight throat vibration. It is a loud call and echoes so sometimes it takes me a while to just narrow the fellow down. But once I do then that cage is marked. One less to have to DNA sex :D
At least with Sally's Strawberries the males sing a lot..... not just trills :?

Boy Candace you have your work cuy out for you! Tricky little ones!

I guess patience and catching them at the right moment is key. Good luck, let us know how many boys you end up with. :)
