Parrot Finches seperated

Post by CandoAviary » Tue Jan 12, 2010 1:06 pm

I seperated the last clutch of RTPF. The 2 seagreens in one cage and the 3 normal in the neighboring cage. This pic was taken last week. They have calmed down somewhat. The last picture you can see the 3 normals, the 2 seagreens behind and then the parents aviary behind that. Parents are on eggs :D

First of all.... how in the world did you catch them?

My three forbes are all over the place. I have not seperated them yet, but they are little stinkers. I have never seen such activity! Goodness gracious they are going all the time.

They are so curious and are constantly investigating something. I cannot imagine life for them in a cage. I think that Misty and I will have to keep them all so they can have free flight.

They are funny... they will go into nest and come out. Hope they are not trying to think about breeding yet. They haven't even colored up enough for me to sex them yet.

LOL... Catching them is a feat. I open the aviary door and let them come out into the room. I catch the parents frirst...usually they will fly right back into the aviary to their favorite perch. Then after the youngsters fly around a bit they tend to gather in the window sills to sunbathe. That's when I net them with my long handled nets

I have breeding pairs in large cages but the youngsters are housed one to a cage once they are 4 to 6 months old. They will breed this young so seperation is important. This will prevent inbreeding :( or loss of hens due to egg binding because they are too immature still.
I don't think you need to worry about placing the chicks in homes where they are kept in cages. I keep them in a variety of settings and truthfully all thrive, breed, and are active in any setting. :D
I have had them in the large aviaries 16' x 18' and they do good. Medium aviaries 6' x 3' and they do good. I also have these pairs in large breeding cages and they do good also. This species is one that will utilize vertical space as well as horizontal.
Many people keep them as pets in flight cages with no problems though aviaries are always a good option :D

They are lovely :) I also have a pair, mine are blue headed ones, they are the first to sing in the morning and also very tame, they are on the feeder even if my hand is there too!

Respect to you Cando, HOW on earth do you find time in the day to look after each cage. WOW that is dedication. I can see now why you say it is very time consuming for you. I complain when I have one extra chage with quarantine to sort out.

Wonderful set up though. You are a wonderful, dedicated breeder.

I agree though you have to stop posting nice pics of Parrot finches. I am off tomorrow to go collect my first pair of seagreens and this same breeder has pieds too. I am going to look at his breeding stock. YOUR influence!

LOL... Sorry :^o ...lol
I love the seagreen colors. It is a wonderful shade of blue...will go great in your purple to blue colection :D
Thanks for your kind words of my dedication to finch keeping. I really want to give my keeps even better conditions. I will build planted outdoor aviaries one day. The crazy bird house will be demolished one day to give way to yet another addition to our own home. We plan on building a car garage and dry boat storage garage with guest quarters above (or nurses quarters if we get old and in need)
Well..I guess we will get old but hopefully not in need...lol
Also a pool  And some really nice, decorative aviaries =D>
Just don't want to build something now that will just have to come down in the future.
If this economy ever turns around that is........ I am patient though and the wait give me much time to learn from all you that have full planted aviaries. :D Tou are not only an influence but an inspiration to me :D

Can't wait to see pics of your new pair =D> Or pairs?

Pair LOL bit cash strapped for now after Owls. Will definately put up pics for your comments.

My aviary works like this. Little finch babies get sold and extra cash from that goes to buying new pairs/seed. usually that works out fine. For now with the whole issue of the protozoan/cocci prob that was in my aviary I opted not to sell any young as they are not of best quality. Other than my RHPF that are doing 100% and showing nil signs of wasting away. Those of my friends that wanted some of the young definately not showing any negative signs of illness are happy to get youngsters. The rest I will keep at least a full year. If they get through a winter then I reckon they are ok and perhaps then I would consider homing them. So i.e. no stock sold so no more cash.
BUT zebbies are always game to make more babies for me. Cheap start but a start to the savings!
