Goulds & molting...

Post by northernflirt » Tue Jul 03, 2007 9:26 pm

Hi all...
Our Goulds seem to have a very hard time during molting. They sleep alot and get puffy and act like they're ill....is this normal? Also, if it is why is it such a hard thing to go thru and how often do they molt?

Molting can be very stressful, and yes, they can act like they're ill. I give fresh eggfood every day so speed things along with plenty of protein. Think about it - they're often replacing a LOT of feathers all at th same time. Mine molt after I take them out of breeding, and have gone into a molt when stressed.

I'm wondering the same thing. Two of my adult goulds are acting ill, but I think they are just molting???

If you aren't already, provide them with liquid or powdered kelp. Goulds need the extra iodine, especially during a hard moult. That's been the case with my Goulds. If they get the iodine at this time, they seem to come through it easier/quicker. I give it to them daily in their water when they are moulting.
