at what age can you tell the sex of zebra finches

I have 4 little zebra finches. They are almost 10 weeks. All have orange beaks the color of mommy zebra. None of them have any male color markings in their feathers. Are they all girls or is it too soon to tell?

You should be able to tell by now. Is there any black markings on the chest area? If not, probably all females.

Can you post a picture? My babies fledge and have strong bar markings that I can tell they are boys.

at that age you should be able to tell, but there are occasional late dovelopers. i bought a pied 'hen' once and paired it up with one of my cocks, and they sat in a breeding cage doing nothing for 3 months, then i heard an unfamiliar singing and went to investigate, and the the pied 'hen' was singing..'she' later moulted out as a cock. the bird had a fully coloured beak when i bought it so presumed it an adult hen.

None of my males had early chest bars. I had to wait for the molt to see the bar.

My last clutch finished molting at about 11 weeks.
Some of the males colored in early. One was LATE to color in, and because it did not sing, I was not sure if it was a M or F until I could see the cheek and flank patches.

I also watch to see which ones "try" to sing...that would be a male. Some times they will try to sing even before they start to molt.

With my zebras I have been able to tell as soon as they have all their feathers. The males have very faint stripes on their chest- even before they leave the nest. However, these have all been the normal gray color. I bet it would be harder to tell with certain color mutation.

Pretty sure they're females at that age.

These were my males five weeks after fledging, although sadly one died suddenly the following day
