problems with zebra finches

Post by florin.sic » Mon Feb 15, 2010 2:01 pm

my adult zebs have layed 3 eggs. All of them have hatched but two of them are blind .this is the first time the parents have layed eggs and they are not inbred. the 2 chicks that are blind are white, but not albinos because the beaks are yellowish coloured and have several grey plumes. What is the problem? :( :( :( Thanks.

And they are blind? I have never had a blind bird.
Although I have heard of white dogs and cats sometimes being either blind or deaf. It's appearently not uncommon.
My dad has a white cat that is deaf and she is not a true albino because she has a blue eye and also a green eye.

There was a thread on a similar note on the Yahoo Zebra Forum about a month ago. I'll post the link but don't think it can be accessed unless one actually joins the forum. Among the discussion this very interesting link was posted ... http://finchwench.wordpress.com/2010/01/15/tiresias/

Apparently this is a fairly common condition with Gray Cheeks. Are you sure that's not what mutation you are dealing with here? Here's the Yahoo link.... http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/zebr ... age/104644
30+ Zebra Finches (The actual number constantly changes) 2 Rabbits (1 Mini Rex, 1 Dutch), 1 Grouchy Old Fart, and 1 Dang Redhead
