Hello, fellow finch lovers!
I currently have two red-throated parrotfinches, and I'm trying to decide on another pair to add to their enclosure. I really want a pair of gouldians, but I've been told they could cross-breed with parrotfinches. I've had my red-throats by themselves for just about one year now. They sleep side-by-side (cutest thing ever!), and seem to get along well. They've also attempted nesting several times (no luck yet). So, I think they are pretty well-bonded.
My question is...if I add a pair of gouldians to their enclosure could the gouldians "break them up" and try to form a new pair with one of my red-throats? Or will the red-throats stay bonded? I don't know how strong finch bonds are or how permanent. I would hate to destroy my finches love life!

I do not think you would have to worry about that. I have parrot finches and they have never attempted to breed with any of my goudlians. If they have a bond with another bird they don't usually do that i don't think.

Re: Bonded pairs?
I agree with Donna. Finch bonds are very strong. I think the only reason anyone should worry about hybridization is if they have a single parrot finch and a single gouldian together. These two will try to form a bond and breed. If you have a bonded pair of gouldians and a bonded pair of parrot finches, I think they will leave eachother alone.
