My so called male canary laid an egg yesterday, and now she has bloody stools. I am OK with he being a she, but am concerned about the blood in her stools. She is very young, and as far as I know has not laid an egg before. Question is; is it normal for the first time a bird lays an egg for it have blood? I thought it was a male so was not doing a breeding feeding schedule.

Re: Male Carnary lays egg, bloody stool
None of my first time finch hens had blood on their poop after their first eggs.
I think you have a case of "egg binding."
First I would provide HEAT (90-95F) to the bird, as it now has an internal injury, and needs to recuperate from that. An easy way is to put an incandescent lamp on one side of the cage, so she can go to/from the lamp to get the amount of heat that she wants.
Try to raise the humidity level. Maybe a damp towel draped on/over the cage will do it.
Provide liquid calcium OR a mix of hard boiled egg and egg shells QUICKLY. The liquid calcium will get into her system faster. But if you don't have liquid calcium, then use egg mix. Egg shells have calcium and the egg the vitamin to help them absorb the calcium from the shells. The calcium in her system will help her pass any more eggs that are "on the way."

Re: Male Carnary lays egg, bloody stool
I got calcium in her right away. Her stools are normal now. She is eating and sitting on and off on her egg. She seems OK. I called the pet store where I got her from and since I bought a male, they will replace her for me. But I think she will get better care here than at the store so I will keep her untill I am sure she is OK.

Re: Male Carnary lays egg, bloody stool
This same thing just happened to me a few weeks ago with a lovebird we thought was a boy.
http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php ... +avian+vet
After the visit to the vet and warm heat she passed the egg. There was blood on the egg, I right away called the vet back. They said they had probed her to do the ultra sound, it may have irrated her. She also had a bit of blood in her stool for about a day afterwards, what must have happened is the egg passing further irrated the lining of the vent and broke a tiny blood vessel, everytime a stool passed it may have broken the tear open a little and fresh blood appeared in the stool.
If it is a tiny amount, keep her warm, hydrated. If she passes a small pool of it or a small puddle I would contact your vet.
Eggbound hens strain to pass the egg and it can irrate the vent and may cause tiny blood vessels to break. Keep us posted, hope she will be ok.
My Lucy is fine, after three days she was herself, except for the name change from Louey to Lucy.

Wow Cindy. I am glad your little Lucy is fine. Sounds like you have a very good vet. All we have is cow vets around here.
My little Carnary only had bloody stools for half a day. Each time there was less blood, and than no blood at all. She seems fine now, but will wait untill the morning and see how she is doing. I fear she may have more eggs to come. Did your Lucy lay any more eggs?
