Java finches seem a bit skinny, or steamline?

Post by Jon114 » Thu Mar 18, 2010 11:10 pm

My pair of white java finches seem to be a tad skinny. I've been feeding finch food because a local petstore owner mentioned there's a poisonous seed to finches in the parakeet mix. Is this just a load of misinformed info? They are pretty streamline, the online pictures of java finches seem more fluffier, or plump. They are active otherwise, they have periods of sleep, and then they play. I've also just introduced egg food into their diet, which is something I haven't done before. This is the first time I've actually researched a lot about my finches, so it's time to take better care of them. :)

Oh, forgot to mention they are a bit small for javas. They are 5-7 months old, and are maybe 4 to 4 1/2 inches? They are in a small cage...I'm currently working that issue out with my parents.

If you're worried they're thin give them an ample supply of food and they will eat their way back to a normal weight. Thin finches are usually sick or otherwise deprived. If you could post some pics of them that would help us alot to figure out what's going on.

I feed my Javas parakeet mix. Finch seed is to small for them. They need the larger millets and the oat groats that are in the mix. Also there is no poisonous seed in parakeet seed mixes. Sounds like this dealer does not need to be selling birds giving information like that.

My finches and parakeets are in an aviary together and get both finch and parakeet seed mixes.

I've never heard of such a thing that parakeet seed is poisonous for finches...
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.
