Anyone know what this might be?
Very pretty birds, larger than a society finch. Lovely neat song!

Looks a bit like a Society/Spice hybrid

I'd thought maybe so too.. but they are bigger than spices as well, and their song isn't like a spice or a society... hmm...

You're right, they are the same thing, at least that is what I am seeing on every finch page I am going to. I could be wrong, but there are many subspecies of Spice finches, maybe it is one of those?

According to the Finch Information Centre it is the same thing! Says they are about 4.5 inches long. But you said yours was quiete large didn't you? Could it have been a hybrid of a spice with some other larger mannikin?

I was thinking the same thing. I looked at the species page on Finch Information Center and saw the whole list of species it can hybridize with. I started looking for pictures of hybrids, but I can only find the Spice X Society hybrid.

They are lengthwise abt the same, but a bigger build body, longer legs than a society.
They are a bronzey brown on back, from around beak down to chest is black. Rump black with a hint of bronze, tails black.
Chest feathers have a lot of black, they are hopping around too much I can't tell if they are black with creamy tips or the other way around LOL Legs are greyish. Beaks are a silvery blueish, top beak has black on sides.

I have a pr of spice finches as well and they are larger than them and the colouring quite different.

Their song is also louder and different from both societies and spices.

So ya, I've no clue.. lol... they are very pretty though :)

I'm not sure how old they are, but I don't think they are juveniles...
