I've had so many cage and TOWEL accidents now that I'm really starting to despise both! I covered my new flights with a cloth shower curtain, a tablecloth and a flat twin sheet. They can't get their nails caught on any of them. I also covered these with sprinkles of grass.

I've tried using the Vinegar and although it does work on breaking down the poop - I just can't stand the smell. :-@

I use Dawn soap for most of my cleaning and the deep cleaning I use Virkon S.

I modified a cage that came with a grate, because I don't like cleaning them either! Was a bit of work to do it, but I like removable tray's instead. See this thread - go right to the end to see the pics of the changes:

First you have to scrape off the larger pieces off poop. I use an old insurance card as a scraper.
Then I use a cage cleaning sponge with a rough nylon cover that I got from PetSmart. Dampen w a little water and it removes the poop that is left on the grates. They do freak out when I clean the cage floor, but I have to do it regularly to prevent bubblefoot, which I think some got from standing on the rough poop which cut into their foot.

I have both grate and non-grate/newspaper cage floors.
But in my breeder cages I have now covered all the newspaper with 1/2" wire mesh. This is to prevent the birds from shredding the newspaper for more nesting material. The issue I have is they would bury their eggs under layers of newspaper, and thus not be able to incubate the eggs.
